The numbers here cover the whole borough: 591,146 homes in 75,727 residential buildings. Elevator buildings hold 49 percent of them, from the Art Deco apartment houses of the Grand Concourse to the towers of Riverdale and Co-op City, and walk-ups hold another 29 percent. Houses for one or two families account for 14 percent, among them the Tudor Revival houses of Fieldston and the houses of City Island and Throgs Neck, while condominiums come to 6 percent and co-ops to 9 percent. Prewar and postwar are close to even: 46 percent of homes sit in prewar buildings, the median year built is 1942, and 17 percent are in buildings from 2000 or later.

Half of the borough's homes are in buildings of 6 floors or more, so many Bronx pickups go through a lobby and an elevator, often with a super who keeps the keys to the service entrance. Write the super's name and the hours the building allows vendors in the Building access box. For a walk-up, the floor number and the steepness of the stairs are all we need. In a house in Riverdale, Pelham Bay or on City Island, tell us which door to use and where we can pull up if the street is narrow.
